The overall purpose of this activity
…to inform the learner of the indications for pelvic floor ultrasound, equipment requirements, how to prepare patients for imaging, how to prepare and handle the ultrasound probe, machine settings, potential confounders of pelvic floor assessment and what a basic pelvic floor imaging entails.

The goal is:

  • to be able to recognise pelvic floor structures in mid-sagittal and axial views on transperineal imaging, both at rest and during manoeuvres;
  • to assess pelvic organ prolapse;
  • To understand the association between sonographic findings of the posterior compartment and obstructed defecation and prolapse symptoms;
  • To learn the utilisation of US imaging in postoperative follow-up after the use of implants to assess complications and facilitate the choice of treatment
  • To be able to diagnose levator ani and anal sphincter trauma.
